When this switch is OFF, the drive motor is turned on automatically when the power is turned on. This switch is factory-set to OFF. Spindle Motor Starting ---------------------- Spinup Disable Swich is OFF When th edrive detects that the +5 VDC and +12 VDC power supplies are within the specified ranges, it executes drive power up tests. After the tests are complete, it becomes ready for SCSI interface logical connection, and starts the spindle motor. It becomes ready for the SCSI commands that require the drive ready when the spindle motor rotation gets to the specific speed. Spinup Disable Switch is ON When the drive detects that the +5 VDC and +12 VDC power supplies are within the specified ranges, it executes drive power up tests. It becomes ready for SCSI interface logical connection, and ready for the SCSI commands that don't require the spindle motor is rotating. It doesn't start the spindle motor until it receives the SCSI Start Unit Command. SW1-5 SCSI PARITY ENABLE ------------------------- When switch SW1-5 is ON, SCSI bus parity is checked by this drive. When this switch is OFF, SCSI bus parity is not checked. This switch is factory set to ON. SCSI parity is generated by this drive regardless of this switch setting. SW1-6 SLOW CABLE ----------------- When switch SW1-6 is ON, the data setup times and transmit periods when this drive transmitting to the SCSI bus are increased. When this switch is OFF, the standard data setup times and transmit periods are used. This switch is factory-set to OFF. SW1-7 has no function! SW1-8 WRITE PROTECT -------------------- When switch SW1-8 is ON, this drive is write-protected. When this switch is OFF, this drive is not write-protected. This switch is factory-set to OFF. SW2-1 Termination Power Setting -------------------------------- When switch SW2-1 is ON, this drive provides terminator power for the SCSI bus cable. When switch SW2-1 is OFF, this drive does not provide terminator power. This switch is factory-set to ON. Terminating Resistor Setting ---------------------------- If three or more SCSI devices are connected to the same SCSI bus, the terminating resistors of SCSI devices except the one located at the furthest end of the cable must be set to OFF. In this drive, the terminating resistors can be switched ON or OFF with switches SW2-2 to 8 and SW3-1 to 8. The terminating resistor switches of this adapter is factory-set to ON. Set them to OFF unless connected at the furthest end of the cable. ********************************************************************** I N S T A L L ********************************************************************** NEC D5882 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION 806-520986-0 REV. UNACCEPTABLE! The D5882 magnetic disk drive can be installed both horizontally and vertically. When installing the drive horizontally, be sure to install the drive with the main printed wiring assembly faced down. (Do not face the front panel of the drive upward or downward.) Fix the drive using four tap holes. Use #6-32UNC (4mm or less deep). A SCSI bus cable, power cable, and frame ground cable are required to operate the drive. If two or more SCSI devices are connected to the same SCSI bus cable, SCSI address setting and terminating resistor ON/OFF switches must be altered properly. The drive has some optional function setting by switches to be set depending on the desired operating. When natural cooling is used, be sure that the air around the drive circulates smoothly so that the heat generated by the drive does not accumulate. When the drive is installed in a cabinet, use a fan in order to circulate the air. Interface Connector ------------------- Connector J1 is a 50-pin non-shielded connector used for interface to the SCSI bus. 50 conductor flat cables and 25-signal twisted-pair cables can be used for the SCSI bus. Cables of impedance 100 ohms +10% and conductor diameter 28 AWG or more should be used to match the impedance of the drive. Power Connector --------------- Connector J3 for power supply is an AMP P/N 172349-1 or the equivalent. The connector housing AMP P/N 1-480424-0 of the cable suits this connector. Select a power cable, considering the current consumption and cable length, and use connector pins that suit the cable material. DC Power and pin connector assignments -------------------+ --+ +-----J3-----+| pin 1 +12 VDC 1| | 4 3 2 1 || pin 2 +12 Volts Return -+ +------------+| pin 3 + 5 Volts Return ------------------+ pin 4 + 5 VDC Frame Ground Connector ---------------------- Connector J4 for frame ground is an AMP P/N 61761-2 or the equivalent. The disk enclosure assembly does not have to be grounded because it is connected to the signal ground. The frame and disk enclosure assembly are insulated from each other. If the frame has to be grounded for safety, use connector J4. The recommended mate connector is AMP P/N 62187-1. SCSI Bus -------- On the SCSI bus, only two SCSI devices can communicate at any given time. When two SCSI devices communicate, one acts as the Initiator and the other acts as the Target. The Initiator originates an operation and the Target performs the operation. The D5882 always acts as the Target. The following figure shows examples of SCSI bus connection. This drive has connector J1 for connection to the SCSI bus cable. The device connected at each furthest end of the cable must have terminating resistors installed. This drive has terminating resistor switches with which terminating resistors can be installed or removed easily. A, AUGUST 1989 Outline and Features -------------------- The D5882 Magnetic Disk Drive is a 5.25-inch Winchester disk drive, having an unformatted storage capacity of 765 Mbytes, employing Small Computer System Interface (SCSI). Features -------- SCSI Interface Employs Single-ended interface. Conforms to the ANSI X3-131-1986 SCSI Specification Supports SCSI Common Command Set (CCS) and various useful optional commands. Supports synchronous SCSI bus data transfers up to 4.8 Mbyte per second. Executes asynchronous SCSI bus data transfer with quick response of REQ/ACK handshakes in Data IN/OUT phase. Contributes to reduction of overhead of SCSI command execution with quick changes in bus phases. Supports logical block sizes of 256 through 4096 bytes in one byte granularity. Supports the defect management that tries to allow contiguous access to sequential logical blocks around a defective block to reduce the additional latency time. Disk Drive ---------- Performs highly reliable accessing at high speed by a voice coil motor with its servo surface located in the middle of the disk drive. Provides a Contact Start/Stop (CSS) area on the innermost of magnetic media. Protects the drive from delivery vibration and impacts by the auto retract functions to the CSS area. Uses a brushless DC spindle motor controlled by a dedicated micro- processor for precise speed control.
