During manufacture the drive is formatted using a format control code of 1EH. After this format, the drive allows the initiator access to all physical sectors. The drive is tested in this mode and any defective sectors are entered into a list known as the Primary Defect List or P-List. The P-List is stored in sectors 0 and 10 of the special Maintenance Track. This track is physically Cylinder -2, Head 0 and is NOT part of the logical address space normally available to the user. The P-List can only be altered or erased by reformatting the maintenance track (Command E1H) or re- formatting the entire drive (Command 04H) using format control codes 1EH or 16H. P-LIST: Maximum number of defective sectors = 30. Defects given to the drive during a RE-ASSIGN BLOCK command are appended to a Growing Defect List or GLIST. The GLIST is stored in sectors 3 and 13 of the maintenance track. The GLIST is stored in physical sector format and may be displayed by the READ DEFECT DATA command ONLY in physical sector format. The GLIST may be used, to- gether with the PLIST, during the FORMAT UNIT command with control code 00H or 10H. In this case, the two lists are searched together. On tracks with a single defect, the defect is skipped, on tracks with multiple defects, the track is re-assigned to the next available spare. The GLIST will be deleted if: The FORMAT MAINTENANCE TRACKS command is issued. or; A FORMAT UNIT command with control code 018H is issued. or; The sector size is changed and the drive is reformatted using a FORMAT UNIT command. G-List: Maximum number of defective sectors = 30. Maximum number defective tracks (Greater than 1 flaw): RO 5180S = 12 RO 5125S = 12 RO 5075S = 12 LED ERROR CODES --------------- The following codes are presented by a sequence of four LED flashes of either long (L), or short (S) duration, repeating continuously: +--------+-----+---------------------------------------------------+ |SEQUENCE|CODE |DEFINITION | +-+-+-+--+-----+---------------------------------------------------+ |S|S|S|L | 1 |The spindle motor speed is out of tolerance (+/-5%)| +-+-+-+--+-----+---------------------------------------------------+ |S|S|L|S | 2 |ROM checksum diagnostic failure | +-+-+-+--+-----+---------------------------------------------------+ |S|S|L|L | 3 |A write unsafe condition has been detected | +-+-+-+--+-----+---------------------------------------------------+ |S|L|S|S | 4 |Drive status has gone not not ready, due to a | | | | | | |hardware fault | +-+-+-+--+-----+---------------------------------------------------+ |S|L|S|L | 5 |RAM buffer memory diagnostic failure | +-+-+-+--+-----+---------------------------------------------------+ |S|L|L|S | 6 |Head arm positioner servo failure | +-+-+-+--+-----+---------------------------------------------------+ |S|L|L|L | 7 |The spindle motor did not start | +-+-+-+--+-----+---------------------------------------------------+ |L|S|S|S | 8 |Spindle motor failed to attain +/-1% speed lock at | | | | | | |spinup | +-+-+-+--+-----+---------------------------------------------------+ |L|S|S|L | 9 |Power supplies fell below acceptable limits | +-+-+-+--+-----+---------------------------------------------------+ All the above error codes are designated FATAL, and resetting of the drive can only be accomplished by powering off, then on again. If the drive has a FATAL error, it will park and lock the heads, stop the spindle motor, and flash the fatal error code on the SELECT LED on the front panel. The drive will still respond to commands sent across the SCSI interface, but will not execute any of them except TEST DRIVE READY, INQUIRY or REQUEST SENSE. FAST BLINK LED -------------- If the RESET signal on the SCSI interface is held active (low), the SELECT LED will flash rapidly. Check for the following conditions: 1. Some other device on the bus is hung up, or has been powered down. 2. A cable has been incorrectly installed.
